Ideal weather for growing Red Lettuce :
Red Letuce requires cold weather to germinate and grow.
Grow well in soil temperature between 15°C to 24°C.
Seed Germination time
Seeds can germinate in 4 to 10 days when soil temperature is around 21°C under ideal soil condition.
If temperature are above 24° or lower than 5° then seed will fail to germinate.
Tip: You can grow them in large soil bed and mulch it to keep the soil temperature down. Growing Red Lettuce in place where they get only morning sun will help them to grow in higher temperature.
Once plant gets hardy it can tolerate higher temperature than the ideal one.

60 to 70 days from seed to harvest in ideal growing condition.

Red Lettuce Lola Rossa can be grown in partial shade. Place with few hours of morning sun and shade from warm afternoon sun is the ideal spot for growing Red Lettuce.
High temperature at time of maturing of Red Lettuce leaves will make them taste bitter.

How to grow Red Lettuce Lola Rossa
Red Lettuce will grow well in porous soil with moisture and organic compost. Choose a soil with good drainage and water holding capacity.
Mix up to 50% Compost / Vermicompost to the soil for growing Lettuce.
Adding some Sand / Perlite and Vermiculite / Cocopeat to the soil will make it good draining and also improve its moisture holding capacity
To Direct Sow Red Lettuce Lola Rossa or Transplant it
Red Lettuce can be directly sowed into pot or soil bed and it can also be grown in seeding tray and its seedling can be transplanted later on.
Transplanting seedling method can be helpful where the weather condition is less than ideal.
How to plant Red Lettuce
Sow the Red Lettuce Lola Rossa seeds at ¼ inch dept.
Dense Planting:
- Dense planting can be used if you want to harvest baby leaves.
- Plant seeds in holes one inch apart. Put two seeds per hole and retain one healthy seedling per hole.
For Full green Leaves
- If you want to harvest fully grown leaves keep the seed holes 5- 6 inches apart.
In Soil Bed
- If you are growing it in soil bed, sow seeds in 1 feet row.
- Keep the distance between seed holes should be 6 inches.
- Sow 2 seed per hole and retain one healthy sapling out of two after the germination.
In Garden Pot
- Grow one red lettuce plant per 6 to 8 inch pot.
- Sow 2 seeds per hole and retain one healthy sapling out of two after germination.
How to Fertilize the Red Lettuce
Red Lettuce needs nitrogen to grow healthy leaves. Fertilize with compost / vermicompost or nitrogen fertilizer after 4 weeks of sowing.
How to water the Red Lettuce
- Red Lettuce needs constant moisture. Water the soil bed or pot once top soil goes dry.
- In hot weather were temperature are more than ideal temperature for Red Lettuce, take extra care to keep soil moist to keep its temperature in ideal range
How to Harvest Red Lettuce
For Red Lettuce growing in rows in the soil bed
- You can let Red Lettuce grow into full bunch of leaves and harvest it in one go.
For Red Lettuce growing in pot
- For densely planted Red Lettuce in, harvesting is continuous process.
- Harvest baby leaves which grow to the size of 1 to 2 inches. This will allow smaller leaves to grow bigger and ready for harvest in next few days
