Can We Grow Blueberries in Pots in India?
If growing chemical-free vegetables is a necessity for many home gardeners, then growing fruits like blueberries is often a dream. While there is plenty of information about fruits like mango, guava, fig, pomegranate, apple, and ber, blueberry cultivation in pots in India is still a mystery for most gardeners.
This is the first article in my series on growing blueberries in containers in India, where I will demystify this exciting fruit and help you grow blueberries successfully at home.

Can Blueberries Really Be Grown in Pots?
The short answer is: Yes! You can grow blueberries in pots in India — but your success depends on your city’s climate and the variety you choose.
Instead of diving into technical terms right away, let’s first look at what Indian gardeners really want to know: do we get enough “cold weather” for blueberries to fruit?
Different blueberry varieties have different requirements for winter coolness.
-
Low-chill blueberries need only around 150–300 hours of winter cool — ideal for many Indian plains cities.
-
High-chill blueberries may need 700+ hours, which are generally available only in hill stations.
In short, your choice of variety and your city’s climate will determine your success.

Chill Hour Requirements Explained
What are Blueberry Chill Hours?
Chill hours are the total number of hours in winter when the temperature stays between 0°C and 7°C. Like apples, blueberries need this cool period to “wake up” from dormancy, produce flowers, and set fruit.
This means that whether you can grow blueberries successfully in pots depends on whether your area gets enough chill hours during winter.
City | Estimated Chill Hours | Growing Feasibility |
---|---|---|
Amritsar | 400–700 hrs | Ideal for mid- to high-chill varieties; good yields expected. |
Delhi | 100–300 hrs | Suitable for low-chill blueberries like Sunshine Blue or Biloxi. |
Lucknow | 50–250 hrs | Low-chill types may work, yield may vary; use grow bags for better results. |
Bhopal | <50 hrs | Grow zero-chill blueberry varieties like Biloxi only. |
Bengaluru | <50 hrs | Possible with Biloxi and careful potting mix + pH management. |
Mumbai | ~0 hrs | Challenging; choose zero-chill varieties and manage humidity carefully. |
Chennai | ~0 hrs | Very difficult; try Biloxi with shade and controlled watering. |

Low-Chill and Zero-Chill Varieties Available in India
Is it the end of the dream for gardeners in hot cities with almost no winter chill? Absolutely not. Thanks to breeding programs, low-chill and zero-chill blueberries are now available in India through nurseries like Neva Plantations.
-
Biloxi – A zero-chill variety, ideal for balcony gardening in Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru.
-
Sunshine Blue – Compact, needs around 150 hours of chill, perfect for terrace gardens in Delhi and Lucknow.
-
Misty / Sharp Blue / Emerald – Great for areas with mild winters; recommended for urban gardeners in Pune, Hyderabad, and similar climates.
-
Legacy / Robin Blue / Top Shelf – Best for Indian hill stations like Ooty, Manali, or Shimla where chill hours exceed 400.

Soil, Potting Mix & Drainage Are Critical
Chill hours are only one part of the equation. Blueberries need acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5), good drainage, and consistent moisture. You will need to prepare a special blueberry potting mix recipe for India, often using cocopeat, pine bark, and perlite.
