Growing broccoli from seeds

Ideal temperature for growing broccoli

• Its ideal growing weather is winter.
• Broccoli seed germinates in temperatures between 10 to 30°C.
• Germinating Broccoli seeds can take up to 4 to 8 days under an ideal temperature range.
• Ideal growing temperature range is 18-28°C.
• It requires a minimum of 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight to attain a good yield.

How to plant broccoli seeds?

• Broccoli seed placement depth – place the seeds on the soil surface and cover it with soil while applying slight pressure.
• Seedlings from tiny broccoli seeds are usually tiny and weak.
• Planting broccoli seedlings indoors in a seed tray or small containers before you transplant them into a pot or a soil bed is a better choice..
• And planting Broccoli seedlings outdoors only when it has at least 4-5 true leaves
• You can grow 1 broccoli plant per 1 sq foot of soil bed or in a 10-12-inch pot/grow bag.
• Use a grow bag or pot that has a minimum 10-12 inches of height.
• In soil beds, plant broccoli 30 cm apart and keep a row to row distance of at least 45 cm.

Soil-mix for Broccoli

• Add a generous amount of compost while preparing the soil mix.
• Broccoli plants are heavy feeders, so, to get a good sized broccoli head, remember to add any good quality ready-to-use fertilizer like Seaweed Extract Fertilizer and Micronutrients Fertilizer.
• Doing so will improve the NPK & micronutrient content of the soil.

Water requirement of broccoli plants

• If you are growing broccoli in soil beds, deep water it at least once a week.
• For pots, water it whenever the top 1 inch of soil has dried up.

• The broccoli head should be harvested before soil temperature climbs above 25°C or the head reaches its maximum weight (600grams) or when its florets start loosening up.
• Delay in harvesting after soil temperature becomes higher than 25°C will result in Broccoli flowering early, making it inedible.
• We can delay the flowering stage or as its commonly known, bolting of broccoli by mulching. You can watch the video on mulching linked at the bottom of this page.
• This broccoli variety can be harvested multiple times when grown under ideal temperature conditions and provided with optimum nutrition.
• To get a multi harvest, cut the main head at a 45-degree angle and apply fungicide to the cut area. You can get up to 3-4 additional broccoli heads weighing 100-300 gram each.

Plant diseases common in broccoli and their prevention

Like any other vegetable, broccoli too is prone to its share of diseases and damage sustained from pest attack.

Common diseases in broccoli

• Damping-Off: Seed, seedling or young plant rots, collapses and then dies.
• Downy Mildew: Leaves first turn yellow, then brown and then finally die.
• Black Rot: Yellowing of leaf edges that then spreads towards the base of the leaves and veins turn black/brown. This black rot infects the stem and head of the Broccoli too. Stem section turns black with yellow slime.
• Wirestem, Fusarium Yellows, and Black Leg are some of the other diseases caused by fungus common in broccoli that can lead to leaf spots, stunted growth and ultimately to death of the plant.
• Turnip mosaic virus and cauliflower mosaic virus can also infect broccoli, leading to leaf deformities, smaller yields and stunted growth and ultimately to death of the plant.

Common pests of Broccoli

• Cabbage worms & Aphids: Eat up young and maturing plant’s sap leading to weakening of plants. These pests are also responsible for spreading viral diseases.
• Cutworms & Root maggots: These pests eat the Broccoli plants from below the soil leading to sudden wilting and ultimately death of the plant..
